Kristofer and the Work of Lent

The Work of Lent

The work of Lent can take many forms as individuals, congregations, and the wider church put into practice the disciplines that help us to reflect, repent, and amend our lives in preparation for Easter. This holy season that focuses us collectively on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving - as the Collect below names - can be such a transformative time.

In today’s video, Kristofer returns to themes in his sermon on Sunday and introduces us to the stream behind his house. As we ponder the patterns that this water body traces, as it flows into the Patapsco River, Chesapeake Bay, and eventually the Atlantic Ocean, we can become increasingly aware of how connected we are - everything is - in God’s creation. Simple practices that invite us to contemplate our interdependence and take responsibility for our actions - like picking up trash along a stream bed - can help us engage the work of Lent in ways that will change us and can change the world. What does the work of Lent look like in your life today and in these 40 days?

Collect in the first week of Lent
Almighty and everlasting God, mercifully increase in us your gifts of holy discipline, in almsgiving, prayer, and fasting; that our lives may be directed to the fulfilling of your most gracious will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
