Amy and Crowds
Crowds
When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. (Matthew 9:36 NRSV)
Have you seen the crowds?
Have you heard about the crowds, the protests all over this country in the wake of George Floyd’s death?
Maybe you or those you love have been among the crowds in recent weeks, in Towson, Lutherville, Baltimore, at the Columbia mall…
Crowds continue to gather. According to yesterday’s USA Today, there have been protests in 1,017 towns and cities thus far – and that’s just what they’ve been able to document.
What are the crowds seeking? What do they want? Why do they gather?
Jesus encounters crowds throughout his ministry.
Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. (Mt 9:35-36)
Jesus looks upon the crowds with compassion.
Jesus looks upon the crowds with empathy.
Jesus looks upon the crowds with love, seeing their hurt, seeing their pain, seeing their cry for justice and peace.
What might it mean for you and I to see as Jesus sees, to look at the crowds with love and compassion?
