Amy and Who Do You Say I Am?
But Who Do You Say That I Am?
Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:13-15)
If Jesus asks you this question today, what would you say?
Who do you say that Jesus is?
It’s interesting to note that even those closest to Jesus do not see him for what he is in any full sense.
They can only make sense of Jesus by going backwards – going back in time to stories they’ve heard before, or people they’ve known before, or experiences they’ve had before.
It’s impossible even for those who knew Jesus to believe– to have faith – that God is doing something completely new and unprecedented in the incarnation, in the birth, life, ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ.
Reading further in this passage, Peter – always the teacher’s pet – seems to get the answer right. He responds right away: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.” (v.16)
And yet we who are reading this today know that Peter will go backwards, too, succumbing to his own fear, and denying Jesus three times in Jesus’ hour of need.
Jesus said to the disciples, “But who do you say that I am?”
Who do you say Jesus is today?
Is Jesus only what Jesus has been to you in the past – or is he that and so much more, so much more yet to be discovered in your journey of faith?
Who do you say YOU are today?
Are you only the sum of your previous experiences – or are you that and so much more?
Who do you say our church is today?
Are we only the sum of two congregations and their history – or are we that and so much more?
