Kristofer and Grief into Joy
Grief into Joy
In today’s SSS reflection, Kristofer ponders the series of Gospel texts in John assigned for our reading over the last few days (chapter 14, 15, 17, and particularly 16). In these accounts, Jesus is trying to prepare the disciples for trauma and loss. He is preparing them for life and ministry after his unthinkable death. Jesus wants them and wants us to remember to love one another to, to look to the Holy Spirit for comfort and strength, to abide in the vine and find deep connection with God, and finally to have our grief being turned into joy. What does that transformation look like in your life? For Kristofer, he speaks of his aunt, and remembering her on what would have been her birthday last week. He invites us to get our hands dirty with him in the process of repotting an aloe plant that she had given to him years ago. God is with us, as we contemplate the dead branches of our lives that need pruning, as we nourish the ground of our being with newly enriched soil, as we look for the healthy shoots and roots that need replanting, as we seek new containers that allow room to grow, God is with us in and through it all.
