Music, Trolls, Diversity, and Community

As STEEP continues this exploration of how music makes community in our new congregation during this pandemic time, Kristofer and Lillian reflect on the surprising places that God’s guidance can come from (in this case, Trolls World Tour, a cartoon movie made for children). Most people connect in some way with a specific musical tradition. While there are those rare individuals that can appreciate all forms of music, most people gravitate to certain sounds that speak to their soul. When you are formed by a particular genre and surround yourself completely with those melodies, doing so can distance you from other equally valid and beautiful expressions, as well as the people who love them. As the church, we have a diverse spectrum of music to draw from. Finding creative ways to do so in this first year together as a new congregation, and especially during this challenging time, is so important in our process of becoming. Perhaps, you can’t imagine finding wisdom from a cartoon troll singing pop, rock, country, or yodeling (I know that I couldn’t). But maybe, just maybe, if we are paying attention, God can speak to us in just about any form of creative expression.
