Loree and Listen, Lament, Act

Listen, Lament, Act

Today I am lamenting the pain and suffering of my brothers and sisters who are people of color. I don't know what its like to be followed in a store simply because of the color of my skin. I don't know what its like to be distrusted because of the color of my skin; to have people be afraid of me because of the color of my skin. To have my life cut short because of fear and hatred and prejudice.

I am lamenting.

Yesterday's psalm, Psalm 102:1-9 is my lament:

Hear my prayer, Lord;
let my cry for help come to you.
Do not hide your face from me
when I am in distress.
Turn your ear to me;
when I call, answer me quickly.
For my days vanish like smoke;
my bones burn like glowing embers.

My heart is blighted and withered like grass;
I forget to eat my food.
In my distress I groan aloud
and am reduced to skin and bones.
I am like a desert owl,
like an owl among the ruins.
I lie awake; I have become
like a bird alone on a roof.
All day long my enemies taunt me;
those who rail against me use my name as a curse.
For I eat ashes as my food
and mingle my drink with tears.

I hope you will share this lament with me - and with others. Post it on your facebook page, speak out against the evils of racism, against our society. I speak for myself today that, as a white person, I have privilege that others don't share. And I lament the fact that not everyone shares in the benefits of this country equally.

Let us lament, let us pray, let us act for the sake of those who have lost their lives, their livelihoods, their dignity because of racism.
