Loree and Music as a Spiritual Practice

Music as a spiritual practice

Today I want to introduce you to a new friend, a new instrument in my house. Music is part of my spiritual practise. I love music, and I also love silence, and I spend a fair amount of my day, when not on calls or Google Meet, in silence. But one part of my day includes practicing the piano and the guitar. This is a new practice, as I have taken on more musical responsibility at STEEP. When I practice, it is not only musical practice, but spiritual practice as well, as I offer up to God the music I make, even if its simply playing scales. It is spiritual practice because I know that, while God has given me many opportunities to use my gifts in God's service, there are many people that play much better than I do. But when we give our gifts to God, God uses them. So as I practice piano and guitar, I ask God to help me minister to people through the gifts. I want to be like the person who had ten talents, and invested them wisely, not the person who had one, and buried it in the back yard.

What gifts has God given you? Did you play an instrument in high school or college? Now, during this extended time of quarantine, might be a good time to dust off that instrument and begin to play again. Pull out your paintbrush, your crochet hook - whatever it is that God has given you a love for, and watch what God will do with your gift.

Just like that little lad, who gave Jesus all he had,
How the multitudes were fed, by some fish and some loaves of bread.
What you have may not seem much, but when you place it in the touch
of the Master's loving hand, then you will understand that your life will never be the same.
