Family Traditions like Santa Lucia Day

In today’s SSS video, Kristofer shares a beautiful tradition that is important in his family: Santa Lucia Day. December 13th marks this feast day in the church calendar (https://www.lectionarypage.net/LesserFF/Dec/Lucy.html), but this tradition takes on varying expressions in different parts of the world. For more information about Santa Lucia Day, see: https://www.whychristmas.com/cultures/sweden.shtml

For Kristofer’s family, half of whom are Swedish, this is a long-standing practice that he has been part of since a boy himself. In today’s video, he shares a brief glimpse into their approach to the traditional attire, the candles, and singing. Another part of their tradition is to share a special recipe of saffron sweet rolls with their wider family and neighbors. Kristofer shares a favorite recipe from https://www.koket.se/mitt-kok/roy-fares/saffransbullar-med-fordeg (Click here for a PDF with the recipe in English.)

What traditions are important to your family? What are ways that you mark time in this season and that invite introspection and celebration?

Collect for St. Lucy:
Loving God, for the salvation of all you gave Jesus Christ as light to a world in darkness: Illumine us, as you did your daughter Lucy, with the light of Christ, that by the merits of his passion, we may be led to eternal life; through the same Jesus Christ, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
