Everyday Risks
…that was me – you did it to me. (Mt 25: 40 MSG)
Jesus is a stranger.
He shouldn’t be where he is.
He isn’t welcome here.
Jesus is sick. He has the virus. There is no antidote or cure.
Jesus is hungry.
Jesus is thirsty.
Jesus is cold.
Jesus is exposed to the elements, the fluctuations in weather. He has no home.
Jesus sits in a prison cell, in detention, in confinement, waiting for a trial, a court decision, the wheels of government bureaucracy to start spinning.
Jesus is a newborn baby, on the brink of the fullness of human life, of the full range of human experience, at the mercy of everything – everything – in this world that affects every human life.
In the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 25, Jesus tells a parable about sheep and goats and a king and the end of the world. In the parable, the righteous ask:
Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family you did it to me.’ (Mt 25:37-40)
