Remembering St. Nicholas - Patron Saint of Sailors - on Pearl Harbor Day

In today’s reflection, Kristofer draws attention to a lesser known attribute of the ministry of St. Nicholas of Myra (270-343), as patron saint of sailors. This is especially relevant given the National remembrance of Pearl Harbor Day (Dec 7, 1941). As Kristofer shares some thoughts and feelings about the convergence of these commemorations, he invites us to pray and connect more deeply with God and our neighbor. As the season of Advent continues, what does it look like for you to slow down, listen, and reflect on things that really matter in your life?

Listed below is the text for the two prayers that Kristofer referenced:

Grant, Almighty God, that your church may be so inspired by the example of your servant Nicholas of Myra, that it may never cease to work for the welfare of children, the safety of sailors, the relief of the poor, and the help of those tossed by tempests of doubt or grief; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
