Giving Away Your Food

"If you have two coats, give one away...Do the same with your food" (Luke 3:11 MSG)

The people coming to John the Baptist to hear his message of repentance and return to the love commandment of the living God ask him "what then should we do?"

The people want to know concretely what to do to receive this baptism that he is offering and get in right relationship with God and neighbor. One answer John gives is:

"Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise." (Luke 3:11)

Throughout Scripture God casts a vision for creation and all people that leaves no one out, that ensures that creation and all people are well cared for, and are loved. In the spirit of John's preaching, St. Francis Episcopal Parish & Community Center is collecting food for a holiday meal to share with anyone who has none on December 19.

On Sunday, December 19 from 2:30-4pm we will be hosting a Christmas Pantry & Carols event. Part of that celebration will include bags filled with fixings for a holiday meal. If you would like to donate a meal bag, please purchase the following items (about $20 total) and bring them in a reusable bag to our office at 2216 Pot Spring Road, Timonium, MD 21093:

  • 3 cans of fruit – peaches, pears, pineapple, or mandarin oranges

  • 3 cans of vegetables – green beans, corn, or tomatoes

  • 2lbs of rice – brown or white

  • 3 cans beans – black, kidney, or pinto

  • 4 cans or packages of soup

  • 6 medium sweet potatoes

  • 1 large bag of fresh carrots

  • 1 package of cookies, cake, or brownie mix

  • 1 Christmas card, unsealed, signed from you

For cans, where possible, please buy flip top/ring pull style. We have learned that not everyone in need has a can opener.

During office hours (9am-2pm, M-Th), please drop off bags at the office. If making a donation outside of office hours, a bin will be available outside the office entrance to receive donations. All donations are due by Thursday, December 16th.

We thank everyone for their contributions and we hope to see you at the event on December 19th!
